ABOUT MOLDING PLANES EXPERT BILL ANDERSON

Bill Anderson is a hand plane expert based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Bill has a special interest in antique molding planes. His passion for wooden molding planes began while traveling in Britain, where he purchased hundreds of vintage molding planes (spelled moulding planes in Britain).

Over the past few decades Bill Anderson learned how to refurbish and use antique molding planes, and he is now one of the world’s leading experts on moulding planes.

Bill teaches a wide variety of classes on the subject of using molding planes and making molding planes at prestigious woodworking schools, including the Wood and Shop Traditional Woodworking School and Roy Underwhill’s Woodwright’s School.

In this video “Choosing, Refurbishing and Using Moulding Planes with Bill Anderson”, he shares an incredible depth of knowledge on the subject of molding planes. Bill starts out showing the basics of molding plane profiles and how to choose antique molding planes so you won’t get a bad molding plane.

Bill then goes into details on how to repair different types of vintage molding plane problems, including how to scrape a new molding profile into molding planes, how to make and heat treat a molding plane iron, and how to fix broken boxing in molding planes.

Bill then moves on to show how to use different types of antique molding planes, including dedicated molding planes, hollows and rounds moulding planes, and beading planes. One very valuable skill he teaches is how to lay out a ogee and ovolo molding profile and then shows how to cut those custom profiles with a set of hollow and round molding planes.
